One girl's car problems are another girl's Sunday night entertainment

Once upon a time, on a Sunday night, I decided to support some ward members by attending a performance of The Lamb of God.  My YSA stake is crazy-talented and has a stake choir and symphony.  I asked someone who lived nearby if I could catch a ride with her, and she was kind enough to oblige.  She, her sister, and I took off to Tempe to attend the performance at the Tempe Institute, leaving sufficient time to arrive early enough to get good seats.  But alas, unforeseen circumstances prevented our timely arrival.

As we were travelling, the driver drew attention to how she put her car into park whenever we came to a red light.  She explained that her brakes were somewhat worn and that she was being extra careful until she had time to go get them taken care of this weekend.  Well, at one of the red lights, less than a mile away from our final destination, she again put her car in park.  But this time, when the light turned green, she was unable to put it back in drive, or even in neutral.  Awkward. We were in a left hand turning lane.  That car stayed there for well over an hour.

At first we thought it would be a good idea to turn off the car and see if we could change gears when we turned it back on.  But, the car refused to turn back on.  So then we started looking for help, buying jumper cables, and eventually finding a good Samaritan who was willing to help us jumpstart the car.  So imagine a vehicle front bumper to front bumper in an intersection.  We got the car jump started, so our good Samaritan took off, and we went to put the car into gear.  But it wouldn't go into gear still.  It was still stuck in park.  Also, the hazard lights wouldn't work this time.  So we moved a nearby construction road thing behind the car.  Yeah, we're classy.  But also safe.

By this time, we had a police officer come across us and try to help out.  Also, the driver's dad had arrived.  We decided to try to jump start the car again and try to get it in gear before disconnecting the cables.  The police officer instructed us three girls to cross the road while he and the dad took care of things.  They got the car started, and the police officer got the car in gear.

So we crossed the street to return to the car, only to learn that the officer had somehow managed to lock the keys in the car.  Awesome.  Twenty minutes and a few other police cars later, the original officer went back to the station to retrieve his lock-out kit.  And eventually, he came back, they broke into the car, pushed it into a nearby gas station, and bid us farewell.

From there, it was only one more jump before we realized that the battery wasn't going to hold a charge and that they would have to use a tow strap to get the car home.  The dad dropped the sister and I off in time to catch the last 10 minutes of the concert before getting the car strapped and towed.  I enjoyed the end of the concert, got a ride home from a friend, and consider it an absolutely lovely evening.  Good times.
